George L. Sheldon

George Lawson Sheldon , the first Nebraskaborn governor, was 14th Governor of Nebraska from 1907 until 1909. He was a Republican from the progressive wing of that party, which was identified nationally with Theodore Roosevelt.

Sheldon defeated the Democratic nominee, Ashton C. Shallenberger, who was viewed as being under railroad influence, by 97,858 to 84,885 votes. Sheldon became the first Nebraska governor born in the state and one of its youngest ever.
